I Lusophone Conferences on Industrial Property

The IP Conferences aimed to promote knowledge transfer, continuous improvement and personnel valorisation of the national bodies which hold the responsibility of granting Industrial Property Rights, through the regular sharing of experiences, discussion and reflection on issues of common interest.

This event gathered the different international institutions, with competence in the realm of Industrial Property and the representatives of the IP Offices from the Member-States of CPLP, around the theme of Industrial Property in Lusophony.

The Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Daren Tang, and the President of the European Patent Office (EPO), António Campinos, attended the event. The opening session, on the 23^rd, was held by the CPLP’s Executive Secretary, Zacarias da Costa. The Portuguese Minister of Justice, Catarina Sarmento e Castro, closed the first day of the IP Conferences.

In Lisbon, on the 23^rd, topics such as the role of IP as a driver for recovery and a foundation for cooperation in CPLP, the use of IP rights in the internationalisation process, the protection of the Appellations of Origin and Geographical Indications, the importance of IP for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises and the entrepreneurship in the younger age groups, were addressed.

In Oporto, on the 24^th, the reception was held by the Port and Douro Wines Institute (IVDP), in a session that addressed, mainly, the topic of national and international protection of Appellations of Origin of Porto and Douro.

The event was restricted to the heads of the CPLP offices and other staff of the national bodies which hold the responsibility of granting Industrial Property Rights, as well as other bodies that deal with Industrial Property.
