Patents and Utility Models

In the first seven months of this year, applications for inventions registered an increase of 8,9% (528), through national route, compared to the applications filed in 2021 (485).

Regarding the granting of inventions, a decrease of 27,5% (137) was registered, when compared to the same period of the previous year (189). These data encompass applications for Patent, Utility Model, Supplementary Protection Certificate and International Patent at national phase.

The total number of International (PCT) and European Patent applications filed at INPI as Receiving Office increased 2,7%  (38 in 2022, 37 in 2021). The number of European Patent validations, submitted in Portugal, decreased 22,3% (2.328), when compared to the same period of 2021 (2.996).


Trademarks and other distinctive signs

Trademarks and other distinctive signs (ODS) recorded a decrease of 21,9 % (12.300) in the past seven months, when comparing to 2021 (15.748). The granting of Trademarks and ODS also decreased 19,1% (9.669 in 2022 against 11.946 in 2021), when compared to the previous year.

Applications for European Union and International Trademarks with Portuguese origin registered a decrease of 19,8% (1.017 in 2022 against 1.268 in 2021).

With regard to International Trademark Designations for national registration and examination, in accordance with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) data, there was a decrease of 18,4% (714), when compared to same period of the previous year (875).


Design

The number of objects included in Design applications recorded a decrease of 11,4%, in relation to the period from January to July of 2021 (660 objects in 2022 and 745 in 2021). The number of objects included in Design grants also recorded a decrease of 18,4%, in relation to the period from January to July of 2021 (714 objects in 2022 and 875 in 2021).
