The provisional statistical data regarding Industrial Property Rights (IPR) applications and grants, concerning January 2023, is now available.
Patents and Utility Models
In January, 56 applications were submitted (a number close to the 55 applications submitted in 2022).
Regarding the national invention grants, 23 national inventions were granted, compared to 17 granted in the same period, which represents a growth of 35,3%.
This data includes applications for Patents, Utility Models, Supplementary Protection Certificates and International patents at national phase.
The total number of International (PCT) and European Patent Applications, filed at INPI as a Receiving Office, was 4 applications in January 2023 and 8 applications in January 2022. The number of European Patent validations, submitted in Portugal in the first month of the year, decreased when compared to the same period in the previous year, decreasing from 375 validations filled to 259.
Trademarks and Other Distinctive Signs
National Trademarks and Other Distinctive Trade Signs (ODS) registered 2.049 applications in January 2023 (higher than the 1.753 applications submitted in January 2022). This increase of 16,9% demonstrates the continued interest in these Rights, which continue to be the most popular in Portugal.
In the same period, 1.270 National Trademarks and ODS were granted (1.271 in 2022).
Applications for International Trademarks with origin in Portugal accounted for 21 applications in January, when compared to the 2 applications registered in January 2022.
The numbers relating to applications for European Union Trademarks with origin in Portugal, also increased from 122 applications in January 2022 to 145 in January 2023.
With regard to International Trademark Designations for national registration and examination, in accordance to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) data, there was an increase when compared to the same period in the previous year. There were submitted 120 International Trademark Designations in 2023 and 113 in the same period of 2022.
Design
The number of objects included in national Design applications grew from 28 in January 2022 to 44 in January 2023, representing the highest increase in percentage terms (57,1%) when compared to the same period.
There were granted 108 applications in January 2023 and 76 objects in the same period of 2022, which represents a growth of 42,1%.
The data for the month of January related to Community Design applications with origin in Portugal has not yet been updated by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), so it will be made available later.
