The provisional statistical data regarding Industrial Property Rights (IPR) applications and grants, from January 2024, is now available.


Patents and Utility Models

In January 2024, 57 applications were submitted (a number very close to the 56 applications submitted in the same period last year).

Regarding the national invention grants, 18 national inventions were granted in January 2024, compared to 23 granted in January 2023, which represents a decrease of 21,7%.

This data includes applications for Patents, Utility Models, Supplementary Protection Certificates and International patents at national phase.

The total number of International (PCT) and European Patent Applications, filed at INPI as a Receiving Office, was 4 applications in the same period of 2024 and 2023. The number of European Patent validations, submitted in Portugal in January 2024, increased 18,1% when compared to the previous year (from 259 validations filled in 2023 to 306 in 2024).


Trademarks and Other Distinctive Signs

National Trademarks and Other Distinctive Trade Signs (ODS) registered 2.027 applications in January 2024 (lower than the 2.051 applications submitted in the same period of 2023), representing a slight decrease of 1,2%.

In the same period, 1.588 National Trademarks and ODS were granted (1.269 in 2023), reflecting an increase of 25,1%.

Applications for International Trademarks with origin in Portugal accounted in the month of January 2024, 4 applications, a lower number when compared to the 21 applications registered in January 2023.

The numbers relating to applications for European Union Trademarks with origin in Portugal demonstrate an increase in the same period, from 124 to 170 applications.

In total, applications for European Union and International trademarks, originating in Portugal, increased by 20% compared to the previous year.

Regarding the International Trademark Designations for national registration and examination, in accordance with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) data, there was a decrease when compared to the same period in the previous year. There were submitted 78 International Trademark Designations in January 2024 and 120 in January 2023.


Design

The number of objects included in national Design applications went from 60 in January 2023 to 39 in January 2024, representing a decrease of 35%.

In the same period, 38 objects were granted in 2024 and 107 in 2023, which represents a decrease of 64,5%.

The data from the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) regarding Community Design applications with origin in Portugal, demonstrate a decrease of 66,4% in 2024, with 88 designs included in applications submitted in January, compared to 262 designs submitted in the same period of 2023.
