The provisional statistical data regarding Industrial Property Rights (IPR) applications and grants, referring to January 2025, is now available.


Patents and Utility Models

In January 2025, 64 applications were submitted (higher than the 57 applications submitted in the same period last year).

Regarding the national invention grants, 31 national inventions were granted in January 2025, compared to 18 granted in January 2024, which represents an increase of 72.2%.

This data includes applications for Patents, Utility Models, Supplementary Protection Certificates and International patents at national phase.

The total number of International (PCT) and European Patent Applications, filed at INPI as a Receiving Office, was 6 applications in 2025 and 4 in 2025. The number of European Patent validations, submitted in Portugal in January 2025, decreased 28.8% when compared to the previous year (from 306 validations filled in 2024 to 218 in 2025).


Trademarks and Other Distinctive Signs

National Trademarks and Other Distinctive Trade Signs (ODS) registered 2,109 applications in January 2025 (higher than the 2,027 applications submitted in the same period of 2024), representing an increase of 4%.

In the same period, 1,836 National Trademarks and ODS were granted (1,588 in 2024), reflecting an increase of 15.6%.

Applications for International Trademarks with origin in Portugal accounted in the month of January 2025, 17 applications, a higher number when compared to the 6 applications registered in January 2024.

The numbers relating to applications for European Union Trademarks with origin in Portugal demonstrate a decrease in the same period, from 170 to 156 applications.

In total, applications for European Union and International trademarks, originating in Portugal, decreased by 1.7% compared to the previous year.

Regarding the International Trademark Designations for national registration and examination, in accordance with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) data, there was an increase when compared to the same period in the previous year. There were submitted 98 International Trademark Designations in January 2025 and 86 in January 2024.


Design

The number of objects included in national Design applications went from 39 in January 2024 to 103 in January 2025, representing an increase of 164.1%.

In the same period, 69 objects were granted in 2025 and 38 in 2024, which represents an increase of 64.5%.

The data from the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) regarding Community Design applications with origin in Portugal, demonstrate a decrease of 89.8% in 2025, with 9 designs included in applications submitted in January, compared to 88 designs submitted in the same period of 2024.
