The provisional statistical data regarding Industrial Property Rights (IPR) applications and grants, referring to January 2026, is now available.


Patents and Utility Models

In January 2026, 111 applications were submitted (higher than the 64 applications submitted in the same period last year).

Regarding the national invention grants, 14 national inventions were granted in January 2026, compared to 31 granted in January 2025, which represents a decrease of 54.8%.

This data includes applications for Patents, Utility Models, Supplementary Protection Certificates and International patents at national phase.

The total number of International (PCT) and European Patent Applications, filed at INPI as a Receiving Office, was 11 applications in 2026 and 6 in 2025. The number of European Patent validations, submitted in Portugal in January 2026, decreased 18.8% when compared to the previous year (from 218 validations filled in 2025 to 177 in 2026).


Trademarks and Other Distinctive Signs

National Trademarks and Other Distinctive Trade Signs (ODS) registered 2,131 applications in January 2026 (higher than the 2,109 applications submitted in the same period of 2025), representing an increase of 1%.

In the same period, 1,876 National Trademarks and ODS were granted (1,836 in 2024), reflecting an increase of 2.2%.

Applications for International Trademarks with origin in Portugal accounted in the month of January 2026, 18 applications, a higher number when compared to the 17 applications registered in January 2025.

The numbers relating to applications for European Union Trademarks with origin in Portugal demonstrate an increase in the same period, from 157 to 174 applications.

In total, applications for European Union and International trademarks, originating in Portugal, increased by 10.3% compared to the previous year.

Regarding the International Trademark Designations for national registration and examination, in accordance with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) data, there was a decrease when compared to the same period in the previous year. There were submitted 95 International Trademark Designations in January 2026 and 98 in January 2025.


Design

The number of objects included in national Design applications went from 103 in January 2025 to 36 in January 2026, representing a decrease of 65%.

In the same period, 40 objects were granted in 2026 and 69 in 2025, which represents a decrease of 42%.

The data from the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) regarding Community Design applications with origin in Portugal, demonstrate an increase of 344.4% in 2026, with 40 designs included in applications submitted in January, compared to 9 designs submitted in the same period of 2025.
