The provisional statistical data regarding Industrial Property Rights (IPR) applications and grants, updated to April 2026, is now available.
Patents and Utility Models
In the first four months of 2026, 526 applications were submitted (higher than the 316 applications submitted in the same period last year).
Regarding the national invention grants, 51 national inventions were granted between January and April 2026, compared to 100 granted between January and April 2025, which represents a decrease of 49%.
This data includes applications for Patents, Utility Models, Supplementary Protection Certificates and International Patents at national phase.
The total number of International (PCT) and European Patent Applications, filed at INPI as a Receiving Office, was 32 applications in the first four months of 2026 and 27 in the first four months of 2025. The number of European Patent validations, submitted in Portugal between January and April 2026, decreased 2.7% when compared to the previous year (from 714 validations filled from January to April 2025 to 695 in 2026).
Trademarks and Other Distinctive Signs
National Trademarks and Other Distinctive Trade Signs (ODS) registered 8,761 applications in the first four months of 2026 (higher than the 8,146 applications submitted in the same period of 2025), representing an increase of 7.5%.
In the same period, 7,053 National Trademarks and ODS were granted (6,584 in 2025), reflecting also an increase of 7.1%.
Applications for International Trademarks with origin in Portugal accounted from January to April 2026, 57 applications, a lower number when compared to the 64 applications registered from January to April 2025.
The numbers relating to applications for European Union Trademarks with origin in Portugal demonstrate an increase in the same period, from 736 to 843 applications.
In total, applications for European Union and International trademarks, originating in Portugal, increased by 12.4% compared to the previous year.
Regarding the International Trademark Designations for national registration and examination, in accordance with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) data, there was a decrease when compared to the same period in the previous year. There were submitted 291 International Trademark Designations between January to April 2026 and 352 between January to April 2025.
Design
The number of objects included in national Design applications went from 424 in the first four months of 2025 to 160 in the first four months of 2026, representing a decrease of 62,3%.
In the same period, 221 objects were granted in 2026 and 171 in 2025, which represents an increase of 29.2%.
The data from the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) regarding European Union Designs applications with origin in Portugal, demonstrate a decrease of 27.2% in 2026, with 171 designs included in applications submitted between January and April, compared to 235 designs submitted in the same period of 2025.
