Industrial Property Rights – January to August 2023

The provisional statistical data regarding Industrial Property Rights (IPR) applications and grants, concerning August 2023, is now available.

Patents and Utility Models

In the first eight months of the year, 560 applications were submitted (less than the 581 applications submitted in the same period of 2022).

Regarding the national invention grants, 130 national inventions were granted, compared to 145 granted in the same period of 2022, which represents a decrease of 10,3%.

This data includes applications for Patents, Utility Models, Supplementary Protection Certificates and International patents at national phase.

The total number of International (PCT) and European Patent Applications, filed at INPI as a Receiving Office, was 43 applications between January and August 2023 (equal to the one recorded between January and August 2022). The number of European Patent validations, submitted in Portugal in the first eight months of the year, decreased 27% when compared to the same period in the previous year (from 2.621 validations filled in 2022 to 1.914 in 2023).

Trademarks and Other Distinctive Signs

National Trademarks and Other Distinctive Trade Signs (ODS) registered 14.302 applications from January to August 2023 (higher than the 13.724 applications submitted in the same period of 2022), representing an increase of 4,2%.

 In the same period, 10.782 National Trademarks and ODS were granted (11.077 in 2022).

Applications for International Trademarks with origin in Portugal accounted for 127 applications between January and August, a higher number when compared to the 106 applications registered between January and August 2022.

The numbers relating to applications for European Union Trademarks with origin in Portugal demonstrate an increase in the same period, from 1.209 to 1.398.

Regarding the International Trademark Designations for national registration and examination, in accordance with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) data, there was a decrease when compared to the same period in the previous year. There were submitted 769 International Trademark Designations in the first eight months of the year and 821 in the same period of 2022.

Design

The number of objects included in national Design applications decreased, going from 690 objects in January-August 2022 to 553 in the same period of 2023, representing a decrease of 19,9%.

There were granted 664 objects from January to August 2023 and 621 objects in the same period of 2022, which represents an increase of 6,9%.

The data from the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) regarding Community Design applications with origin in Portugal, demonstrate an increase of 85,2% in the first eight months of the year, with 661 designs included in applications, compared to 357 designs in the same period of 2022.
