The provisional statistical data regarding Industrial Property Rights (IPR) applications and grants, updated to December 2024, is now available.
Patents and Utility Models
In 2024, 951 applications for national inventions were submitted, representing an increase of 5.2% compared to the 904 applications submitted in the same period last year.
Regarding the national invention grants, 207 national inventions were granted between January and December 2024, compared to 193 inventions granted in the same period of 2023, which represents an increase of 7.3%.
This data includes applications for Patents, Utility Models, Supplementary Protection Certificates and International patents at national phase.
The total number of International (PCT) and European Patent Applications, filed at INPI as a Receiving Office, was 77 applications in 2024 (higher than the applications submitted in the same period last year). The number of European Patent Applications in Portugal in 2024 decreased by 11.6% compared to the same period of 2023, reducing from 2,985 validations in 2023 to 2,640 in 2024.
Trademarks and Other Distinctive Signs
National Trademarks and Other Distinctive Trade Signs (ODS) registered 21,529 applications in 2024 (higher than the 20,924 applications submitted in the same period of 2023), representing an increase of 2.9%.
In the same period, 17,662 National Trademarks and ODS were granted (16,079 in 2023), reflecting an increase of 9.8%.
In 2024, applications for International Trademarks with origin in Portugal accounted 148 applications, a lower number when compared to the 185 applications registered in the same period of 2023. The numbers regarding applications for European Union Trademarks with origin in Portugal are not yet available for December 2024.
Regarding the International Trademark Designations for national registration and examination, in accordance with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) data, there was a decrease when compared to the same period in the previous year. There were submitted 1,044 International Trademark Designations in 2024 and 1,124 in 2023.
Design
The number of objects included in national Design applications went from 808 in 2023 to 610 in 2024, representing a decrease of 24.5%.
In the same period, 611 objects were granted in 2024, and 901 objects were granted in 2023, which represents a decrease of 32.2%.
Data from the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) on Community Design applications in Portugal for the month of December is currently unavailable.
