Patents and Utility Models
In the first two months of the year, 121 applications for national inventions were submitted, representing an increase of 9% compared to the 111 applications submitted in the same period last year.
Regarding the national invention grants, 35 national inventions were granted between January and February 2024, compared to 40 inventions granted between January and February 2023, which represents a decrease of 12,5%.
This data includes applications for Patents, Utility Models, Supplementary Protection Certificates and International patents at national phase.
The total number of International (PCT) and European Patent Applications, filed at INPI as a Receiving Office, was 11 applications in the first two months of 2024, compared to the 8 applications filed in the first two months of 2023. The number of European Patent validations, submitted in Portugal between January and February 2024, increased 3,2% when compared to the same period last year (from 502 validations filled in 2023 to 518 in 2024).
Trademarks and Other Distinctive Signs
National Trademarks and Other Distinctive Trade Signs (ODS) registered 3.983 applications from January to February 2024 (higher than the 3.916 applications submitted in the same period of 2023), representing a slight increase of 1,7%.
In the same period, 2.918 National Trademarks and ODS were granted (2.646 in 2023), reflecting an increase of 10,3%.
Between January and February 2024, applications for International Trademarks with origin in Portugal accounted 26 applications, a lower number when compared to the 30 applications registered in the same period of 2023.
The numbers relating to applications for European Union Trademarks with origin in Portugal are not yet available.
Regarding the International Trademark Designations for national registration and examination, in accordance with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) data, there was decrease when compared to the same period in the previous year. There were submitted 148 International Trademark Designations in the first two months of 2024 and 218 in 2023.
Design
The number of objects included in national Design applications went from 148 between January and February 2023 to 56 between January and February 2024, representing a decrease of 62,2%.
In the same period, 104 objects were granted in 2024 and 144 in 2023, which represents a decrease of 27,8%.
The data from the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) regarding Community Design applications with origin in Portugal, are not yet available.
