The provisional statistical data regarding Industrial Property Rights (IPR) applications and grants, concerning March 2024, is now available.


Patents and Utility Models

In the first three months of the year, 202 applications for national inventions were submitted, representing an increase of 14,8% compared to the 176 applications submitted in the same period last year.

Regarding the national invention grants, 47 national inventions were granted between January and March 2024, compared to 54 inventions granted between January and March 2023, which represents a decrease of 13%.

This data includes applications for Patents, Utility Models, Supplementary Protection Certificates and International patents at national phase.

The total number of International (PCT) and European Patent Applications, filed at INPI as a Receiving Office, was 17 applications in the first three months of 2024, compared to the 16 applications filed in the first three months of 2023. The number of European Patent validations, submitted in Portugal between January and March 2024, decreased 2,3% when compared to the same period last year (from 748 validations filled in 2023 to 731 in 2024).


Trademarks and Other Distinctive Signs

National Trademarks and Other Distinctive Trade Signs (ODS) registered 5.926 applications from January to March 2024 (lower than the 6.064 applications submitted in the same period of 2023), representing a decrease of 2,3%.

In the same period, 4.452 National Trademarks and ODS were granted (4.070 in 2023), reflecting an increase of 9,4%.

Between January and March 2024, applications for International Trademarks with origin in Portugal accounted 41 applications, a lower number when compared to the 57 applications registered in the same period of 2023.

The numbers relating to applications for European Union Trademarks with origin in Portugal are not yet available.

Regarding the International Trademark Designations for national registration and examination, in accordance with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) data, there was decrease when compared to the same period in the previous year. There were submitted 247 International Trademark Designations in the first three months of 2024 and 312 in 2023.


Design

The number of objects included in national Design applications went from 256 between January and March 2023 to 145 between January and March 2024, representing a decrease of 43,4%.

In the same period, 147 objects were granted in 2024 and 296 in 2023, which represents a decrease of 50,3%.

The data from the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) regarding Community Design applications with origin in Portugal, are not yet available.
