The provisional statistical data regarding Industrial Property Rights (IPR) applications and grants, updated to July 2024, is now available.


Patents and Utility Models

In the first seven months of the year, 538 applications for national inventions were submitted, representing an increase of 7% compared to the 503 applications submitted in the same period last year.

Regarding the national invention grants, 121 national inventions were granted between January and July 2024, compared to 119 inventions granted between January and July 2023, which represents an increase of 1,7%.

This data includes applications for Patents, Utility Models, Supplementary Protection Certificates and International patents at national phase.

The total number of International (PCT) and European Patent Applications, filed at INPI as a Receiving Office, was 44 applications in the first seven months of 2024, compared to the 39 applications filed in the first seven months of 2023. The number of European Patent validations, submitted in Portugal between January and July 2024, decreased 5,2% when compared to the same period last year (from 1.666 validations filled in 2023 to 1.580 in 2024).


Trademarks and Other Distinctive Signs

National Trademarks and Other Distinctive Trade Signs (ODS) registered 13.280 applications from January to July 2024 (higher than the 12.958 applications submitted in the same period of 2023), representing an increase of 2,5%.

In the same period, 10.312 National Trademarks and ODS were granted (9.534 in 2023), reflecting an increase of 8,2%.

Between January and July 2024, applications for International Trademarks with origin in Portugal accounted 103 applications, a lower number when compared to the 115 applications registered in the same period of 2023.

The numbers relating to applications for European Union Trademarks with origin in Portugal recorded, in the same period, 1.476 applications in 2024 and 1.241 in 2023.

In total, there was an increase of 16,4% in applications with origin in Portugal.

Regarding the International Trademark Designations for national registration and examination, in accordance with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) data, there was a decrease when compared to the same period in the previous year. There were submitted 579 International Trademark Designations in the first seven months of 2024 and 661 in 2023.


Design

The number of objects included in national Design applications went from 550 between January and July 2023 to 418 between January and July 2024, representing a decrease of 24%.

In the same period, 361 objects were granted in 2024 and 619 in 2023, which represents a decrease of 41,7%.

The data from the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) regarding Community Design applications with origin in Portugal demonstrates a decrease of 41,3%, with 623 applications submitted in the first seven months of 2023 and 366 in the same period of 2024.
