The provisional statistical data regarding Industrial Property Rights (IPR) applications and grants, updated to March 2025, is now available.
Patents and Utility Models
In the first three months of 2025, 241 applications were submitted (higher than the 202 applications submitted in the same period last year).
Regarding the national invention grants, 73 national inventions were granted from January to March 2025, compared to 47 granted from January to March 2024, which represents an increase of 55.3%.
This data includes applications for Patents, Utility Models, Supplementary Protection Certificates and International patents at national phase.
The total number of International (PCT) and European Patent Applications, filed at INPI as a Receiving Office, was 19 applications in the first three months of 2025 and 17 in the first three months of 2024. The number of European Patent validations, submitted in Portugal from January to March 2025, decreased 23.5% when compared to the previous year (from 731 validations filled in 2024 to 559 in 2025).
Trademarks and Other Distinctive Signs
National Trademarks and Other Distinctive Trade Signs (ODS) registered 6,193 applications in the first three months of 2025 (higher than the 5,926 applications submitted in the same period of 2024), representing an increase of 4.5%.
In the same period, 5,028 National Trademarks and ODS were granted (4,452 in 2024), reflecting an increase of 12,9%.
Applications for International Trademarks with origin in Portugal accounted from January to March 2025, 51 applications, higher than the 41 applications registered in January 2024. The numbers relating to applications for European Union Trademarks with origin in Portugal demonstrate a decrease in the same period, from 590 to 503 applications.
In total, applications for European Union and International trademarks, originating in Portugal, decreased by 12.2% compared to the previous year.
Regarding the International Trademark Designations for national registration and examination, in accordance with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) data, there was an increase when compared to the same period in the previous year. There were submitted 271 International Trademark Designations in the first three months of 2025 and 247 in the first three months of 2024.
Design
The number of objects included in national Design applications went from 145 in the first three months of 2024 to 229 in the first two months of 2025, representing an increase of 57.9%.
In the same period, 117 objects were granted in 2025 and 147 in 2024, which represents a decrease of 20.4%.
The data from the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) regarding Community Design applications with origin in Portugal, demonstrate a decrease of 35.9% in 2025, with 100 designs included in applications submitted from January to March 2025, compared to 156 designs submitted in the same period of 2024.
