Industrial Property Rights – January to May 2024

The provisional statistical data regarding Industrial Property Rights (IPR) applications and grants, concerning May 2024, is now available.

Patents and Utility Models

In the first five months of the year, 382 applications for national inventions were submitted, representing an increase of 27,8% compared to the 299 applications submitted in the same period last year.

Regarding the national invention grants, 88 national inventions were granted between January and May 2024, compared to 84 inventions granted between January and May 2023, which represents an increase of 4,8%.

This data includes applications for Patents, Utility Models, Supplementary Protection Certificates and International patents at national phase.

The total number of International (PCT) and European Patent Applications, filed at INPI as a Receiving Office, was 28 applications in the first five months of 2024, compared to the 21 applications filed in the first five months of 2023. The number of European Patent validations, submitted in Portugal between January and May 2024, decreased 4,7% when compared to the same period last year (from 1.205 validations filled in 2023 to 1.148 in 2024).

Trademarks and Other Distinctive Signs

National Trademarks and Other Distinctive Trade Signs (ODS) registered 9.838 applications from January to May 2024 (higher than the 9.565 applications submitted in the same period of 2023), representing an increase of 2,9%.

In the same period, 7.778 National Trademarks and ODS were granted (7.007 in 2023), reflecting an increase of 11%.

Between January and May 2024, applications for International Trademarks with origin in Portugal accounted 70 applications, a lower number when compared to the 88 applications registered in the same period of 2023.

The numbers relating to applications for European Union Trademarks with origin in Portugal recorded, in the same period, 1.063 applications in 2024 and 870 in 2023.

In total, there was an increase of 18.3% in applications with origin in Portugal.

Regarding the International Trademark Designations for national registration and examination, in accordance with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) data, there was a decrease when compared to the same period in the previous year. There were submitted 385 International Trademark Designations in the first five months of 2024 and 464 in 2023.

Design

The number of objects included in national Design applications went from 391 between January and May 2023 to 267 between January and May 2024, representing a decrease of 31,7%.

In the same period, 201 objects were granted in 2024 and 435 in 2023, which represents a decrease of 53,8%.

The data from the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) regarding Community Design applications with origin in Portugal demonstrates a decrease of 37,9%, with 478 applications submitted in the first five months of 2023 and 297 in the same period of 2024.
