Industrial Property Rights – January to May 2025

The provisional statistical data regarding Industrial Property Rights (IPR) applications and grants, updated to May 2025, is now available.

Patents and Utility Models

In the first five months of 2025, 404 applications were submitted (higher than the 382 applications submitted in the same period last year).

Regarding the national invention grants, 129 national inventions were granted from January to May 2025, compared to 88 granted from January to May 2024, which represents an increase of 46.6%.

This data includes applications for Patents, Utility Models, Supplementary Protection Certificates and International patents at national phase.

The total number of International (PCT) and European Patent Applications, filed at INPI as a Receiving Office, was 31 applications in the first five months of 2025 and 28 in the first five months of 2024. The number of European Patent validations, submitted in Portugal from January to May 2025, decreased 24% when compared to the previous year (from 1.148 validations filled in 2024 to 873 in 2025).

Trademarks and Other Distinctive Signs

National Trademarks and Other Distinctive Trade Signs (ODS) registered 10,128 applications in the first five months of 2025 (higher than the 9,838 applications submitted in the same period of 2024), representing an increase of 2.9%.

In the same period, 8,074 National Trademarks and ODS were granted (7,778 in 2024), reflecting an increase of 3,8%.

Applications for European Union Trademarks with origin in Portugal accounted from January to May 2025, 968 applications, lower than the 1,062 applications registered from January to May 2024. The numbers relating to International Trademarks with origin in Portugal are not yet available and will therefore be presented later.

Regarding the International Trademark Designations for national registration and examination, the data from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) are also unavailable at this time and will be presented later.

Design

The number of objects included in national Design applications went from 267 in the first five months of 2024 to 502 in the first five months of 2025, representing an increase of 88%.

In the same period, 306 objects were granted in 2025 and 201 in 2024, which represents an increase of 52.2%.

The data from the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) regarding Community Design applications with origin in Portugal demonstrate an increase of 6.4% in 2025, with 316 designs included in applications submitted from January to May 2025, compared to 297 designs submitted in the same period of 2024.
