The provisional statistical data regarding Industrial Property Rights (IPR) applications and grants, updated to May 2026, is now available.


Patents and Utility Models

In the first five months of 2026, 651 applications were submitted (higher than the 404 applications submitted in the same period last year).

Regarding the national invention grants, 69 national inventions were granted between January and May 2026, compared to 129 granted between January and May 2025, which represents a decrease of 46,5%.

This data includes applications for Patents, Utility Models, Supplementary Protection Certificates and International Patents at national phase.

The total number of International (PCT) and European Patent Applications, filed at INPI as a Receiving Office, was 46 applications in the first five months of 2026 and 32 in the first five months of 2025. The number of European Patent validations, submitted in Portugal between January and May 2026, decreased 0.7% when compared to the previous year (from 873 validations filled from January to May 2025 to 867 in 2026).


Trademarks and Other Distinctive Signs

National Trademarks and Other Distinctive Trade Signs (ODS) registered 11,013 applications in the first five months of 2026 (higher than the 10,132 applications submitted in the same period of 2025), representing an increase of 8.7%.

In the same period, 8,706 National Trademarks and ODS were granted (8,072 in 2025), reflecting also an increase of 7.9%.

Applications for International Trademarks with origin in Portugal accounted from January to May 2026, 73 applications, a lower number when compared to the 75 applications registered from January to May 2025.

The numbers relating to applications for European Union Trademarks with origin in Portugal demonstrate an increase in the same period, from 966 to 1,209 applications.

In total, applications for European Union and International trademarks, originating in Portugal, increased by 23.2% compared to the previous year.

Regarding the International Trademark Designations for national registration and examination, in accordance with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) data, there was a decrease when compared to the same period in the previous year. There were submitted 366 International Trademark Designations between January to May 2026 and 428 between January to May 2025.


Design

The number of objects included in national Design applications went from 501 in the first five months of 2025 to 330 in the first five months of 2026, representing a decrease of 34,1%.

In the same period, 262 objects were granted in 2026 and 311 in 2025, which represents a decrease of 15.8%.

The data from the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) regarding European Union Designs applications with origin in Portugal, demonstrate a decrease of 3.1% in 2026, with 308 designs included in applications submitted between January and May, compared to 318 designs submitted in the same period of 2025.
