The provisional statistical data regarding Industrial Property Rights (IPR) applications and grants, concerning November 2023, is now available.
Patents and Utility Models
In the first eleven months of the year, 790 applications were submitted (less than the 820 applications submitted in the same period of 2022).
Regarding the national invention grants, 180 national inventions were granted, compared to 201 granted in the same period of 2022, which represents a decrease of 10,4%.
This data includes applications for Patents, Utility Models, Supplementary Protection Certificates and International patents at national phase.
The total number of International (PCT) and European Patent Applications, filed at INPI as a Receiving Office, was 68 applications between January and November 2023 which means that there was an increase of 17,2% when compared to the same period of 2022. The number of European Patent validations, submitted in Portugal in the first eleven months of the year, decreased 22,3% when compared to the same period in the previous year (from 3.540 validations filled in 2022 to 2.752 in 2023).
Trademarks and Other Distinctive Signs
National Trademarks and Other Distinctive Trade Signs (ODS) registered 19.675 applications from January to November 2023 (higher than the 18.904 applications submitted in the same period of 2022), representing an increase of 4,1%.
In the same period, 14.996 National Trademarks and ODS were granted (15.071 in 2022).
Applications for International Trademarks with origin in Portugal accounted for 164 applications between January and November, a higher number when compared to the 141 applications registered between January and November 2022.
The numbers relating to applications for European Union Trademarks with origin in Portugal demonstrate an increase in the same period, from 1.654 to 1.990.
In total, applications origin PT increased 20% when compared to the first eleven months of 2022.
Regarding the International Trademark Designations for national registration and examination, in accordance with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) data, there was a decrease when compared to the same period in the previous year. There were submitted 1.039 International Trademark Designations in the first eleven months of the year and 1.109 in the same period of 2022.
Design
The number of objects included in national Design applications decreased, going from 979 objects in January-November 2022 to 771 in the same period of 2023, representing a decrease of 21,2%.
There were granted 837 objects from January to November 2023 and 877 objects in the same period of 2022, which represents a decrease of 4,6%.
The data from the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) regarding Community Design applications with origin in Portugal, demonstrate an increase of 18% in the first eleven months of the year, with 773 designs included in applications, compared to 655 designs in the same period of 2022.
