The provisional statistical data regarding Industrial Property Rights (IPR) applications and grants, concerning October 2023, is now available.


Patents and Utility Models

In the first ten months of the year, 704 applications were submitted (less than the 733 applications submitted in the same period of 2022).

Regarding the national invention grants, 162 national inventions were granted, compared to 185 granted in the same period of 2022, which represents a decrease of 12,4%.

This data includes applications for Patents, Utility Models, Supplementary Protection Certificates and International patents at national phase.

The total number of International (PCT) and European Patent Applications, filed at INPI as a Receiving Office, was 60 applications between January and October 2023 which means that there was an increase of 20% when compared to the same period of 2022. The number of European Patent validations, submitted in Portugal in the first ten months of the year, decreased 24,1% when compared to the same period in the previous year (from 3.221 validations filled in 2022 to 2.445 in 2023).


Trademarks and Other Distinctive Signs

National Trademarks and Other Distinctive Trade Signs (ODS) registered 17.885 applications from January to October 2023 (higher than the 17.135 applications submitted in the same period of 2022), representing an increase of 4,4%.

 In the same period, 13.726 National Trademarks and ODS were granted (13.857 in 2022).

Applications for International Trademarks with origin in Portugal accounted for 146 applications between January and October, a higher number when compared to the 129 applications registered between January and October 2022.

The numbers relating to applications for European Union Trademarks with origin in Portugal demonstrate an increase in the same period, from 1.519 to 1.801.

In total, applications origin PT increased 18,1% when compared to the first ten months of 2022.

Regarding the International Trademark Designations for national registration and examination, in accordance with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) data, there was a decrease when compared to the same period in the previous year. There were submitted 948 International Trademark Designations in the first ten months of the year and 1.020 in the same period of 2022.


Design

The number of objects included in national Design applications decreased, going from 939 objects in January-October 2022 to 702 in the same period of 2023, representing a decrease of 25,2%.

There were granted 811 objects from January to October 2023 and 858 objects in the same period of 2022, which represents a decrease of 5,5%.

The data from the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) regarding Community Design applications with origin in Portugal, demonstrate an increase of 53,5% in the first ten months of the year, with 689 designs included in applications, compared to 449 designs in the same period of 2022.
