The provisional statistical data regarding Industrial Property Rights (IPR) applications and grants, concerning September 2023, is now available.


Patents and Utility Models

In the first nine months of the year, 628 applications were submitted (less than the 659 applications submitted in the same period of 2022).

Regarding the national invention grants, 144 national inventions were granted, compared to 169 granted in the same period of 2022, which represents a decrease of 14,8%.

This data includes applications for Patents, Utility Models, Supplementary Protection Certificates and International patents at national phase.

The total number of International (PCT) and European Patent Applications, filed at INPI as a Receiving Office, was 53 applications between January and September 2023 which means that there was an increase of 17,8% when compared to the same period of 2022. The number of European Patent validations, submitted in Portugal in the first nine months of the year, decreased 26,2% when compared to the same period in the previous year (from 2.930 validations filled in 2022 to 2.163 in 2023).


Trademarks and Other Distinctive Signs

National Trademarks and Other Distinctive Trade Signs (ODS) registered 16.052 applications from January to September 2023 (higher than the 15.328 applications submitted in the same period of 2022), representing an increase of 4,7%.

 In the same period, 12.412 National Trademarks and ODS were granted (12.478 in 2022).

Applications for International Trademarks with origin in Portugal accounted for 137 applications between January and September, a higher number when compared to the 119 applications registered between January and September 2022.

The numbers relating to applications for European Union Trademarks with origin in Portugal demonstrate an increase in the same period, from 1.487 to 1.742.

In total, applications origin PT increased 17,1% when compared to the first nine months of 2022.

Regarding the International Trademark Designations for national registration and examination, in accordance with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) data, there was a decrease when compared to the same period in the previous year. There were submitted 874 International Trademark Designations in the first nine months of the year and 929 in the same period of 2022.


Design

The number of objects included in national Design applications decreased, going from 858 objects in January-September 2022 to 672 in the same period of 2023, representing a decrease of 21,7%.

There were granted 799 objects from January to September 2023 and 750 objects in the same period of 2022, which represents an increase of 6,5%.

The data from the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) regarding Community Design applications with origin in Portugal, demonstrate an increase of 63,7% in the first nine months of the year, with 671 designs included in applications, compared to 410 designs in the same period of 2022.
