Industrial Property Rights – January to August 2024

The provisional statistical data regarding Industrial Property Rights (IPR) applications and grants, updated to August 2024, is now available.

Patents and Utility Models

In the first eight months of the year, 588 applications for national inventions were submitted, representing an increase of 5% compared to the 560 applications submitted in the same period last year.

Regarding the national invention grants, 135 national inventions were granted between January and August 2024, compared to 130 inventions granted between January and August 2023, which represents an increase of 3,8%.

This data includes applications for Patents, Utility Models, Supplementary Protection Certificates and International patents at national phase.

The total number of International (PCT) and European Patent Applications, filed at INPI as a Receiving Office, was 50 applications in the first eight months of 2024, compared to the 43 applications filed in the first eight months of 2023. The number of European Patent validations, submitted in Portugal between January and August 2024, decreased 7,9% when compared to the same period last year (from 1.914 validations filled in 2023 to 1.763 in 2024).

Trademarks and Other Distinctive Signs

National Trademarks and Other Distinctive Trade Signs (ODS) registered 14.617 applications from January to August 2024 (higher than the 14.302 applications submitted in the same period of 2023), representing an increase of 2,2%.

In the same period, 11.520 National Trademarks and ODS were granted (10.782 in 2023), reflecting an increase of 6,8%.

Between January and August 2024, applications for International Trademarks with origin in Portugal accounted 109 applications, a lower number when compared to the 127 applications registered in the same period of 2023.

The numbers relating to applications for European Union Trademarks with origin in Portugal recorded, in the same period, 1.655 applications in 2024 and 1.398 in 2023.

In total, there was an increase of 15,7% in applications with origin in Portugal.

Regarding the International Trademark Designations for national registration and examination, in accordance with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) data, there was a decrease when compared to the same period in the previous year. There were submitted 663 International Trademark Designations in the first eight months of 2024 and 769 in 2023.

Design

The number of objects included in national Design applications went from 553 between January and August 2023 to 454 between January and August 2024, representing a decrease of 17,9%.

In the same period, 408 objects were granted in 2024 and 664 in 2023, which represents a decrease of 38,6%.

The data from the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) regarding Community Design applications with origin in Portugal demonstrates a decrease of 41,6%, with 661 applications submitted in the first eight months of 2023 and 386 in the same period of 2024.
