Industrial Property Rights – January to June 2024

The provisional statistical data regarding Industrial Property Rights (IPR) applications and grants, concerning June 2024, is now available.

Patents and Utility Models

In the first six months of the year, 459 applications for national inventions were submitted, representing an increase of 8% compared to the 425 applications submitted in the same period last year.

Regarding the national invention grants, 96 national inventions were granted between January and June 2024, compared to 106 inventions granted between January and June 2023, which represents a decrease of 9,4%.

This data includes applications for Patents, Utility Models, Supplementary Protection Certificates and International patents at national phase.

The total number of International (PCT) and European Patent Applications, filed at INPI as a Receiving Office, was 35 applications in the first six months of 2024, compared to the 29 applications filed in the first six months of 2023. The number of European Patent validations, submitted in Portugal between January and June 2024, decreased 5,8% when compared to the same period last year (from 1.436 validations filled in 2023 to 1.353 in 2024).

Trademarks and Other Distinctive Signs

National Trademarks and Other Distinctive Trade Signs (ODS) registered 11.441 applications from January to June 2024 (higher than the 11.245 applications submitted in the same period of 2023), representing an increase of 1,7%.

In the same period, 8.819 National Trademarks and ODS were granted (8.222 in 2023), reflecting an increase of 7,3%.

Between January and June 2024, applications for International Trademarks with origin in Portugal accounted 82 applications, a lower number when compared to the 103 applications registered in the same period of 2023.

The numbers relating to applications for European Union Trademarks with origin in Portugal recorded, in the same period, 1.278 applications in 2024 and 1.060 in 2023.

In total, there was an increase of 16,9% in applications with origin in Portugal.

Regarding the International Trademark Designations for national registration and examination, in accordance with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) data, there was a decrease when compared to the same period in the previous year. There were submitted 488 International Trademark Designations in the first six months of 2024 and 571 in 2023.

Design

The number of objects included in national Design applications went from 524 between January and June 2023 to 397 between January and June 2024, representing a decrease of 24,2%.

In the same period, 283 objects were granted in 2024 and 526 in 2023, which represents a decrease of 46,2%.

The data from the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) regarding Community Design applications with origin in Portugal demonstrates a decrease of 40%, with 573 applications submitted in the first six months of 2023 and 344 in the same period of 2024.
