Industrial Property numbers in April 2021

The number of applications for trademarks and other distinctive signs increased once again when compared to the same period of the previous year: 51.3% more, with 2599 applications submitted in April. The granting of trademarks and other distinctive signs increased by 40.4% in relation to the first four-month period of 2020, with 1786 grants in April alone.

Applications originating in Portugal for EU and International trademarks maintained the upward trend (25% more than in 2020), recording - as in March - a number of applications higher than any other month of the previous year.

National grants of patents, despite the decrease in relation to March 2021, maintain the upward trend when compared to the same period of 2020. The number of applications, although maintaining a downward trend in relation to the previous year, remains within the average recorded in January and February 2021.

National design grants registered the highest number of the year, with 109 grants – almost the double of the previous month; nevertheless, these numbers are still ​​inferior to those registered in the previous year.

Regarding national designs included in applications - and although there was a decrease when comparing to March - in general, the monthly figures ​​have been higher than those recorded in the same period of 2020. However, the exceptional amount recorded in January 2020 (982) is the reason for the negative trend when compared to the previous year.
